Cinematic expression with a full-frame sensor
The full-frame FX2 delivers stunning cinematic images, combining high resolution with beautiful bokeh. Featuring a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor and supported by the BIONZ XR™ image processing engine and advanced AI processing engine, the camera offers high sensitivity, wide aperture and 33MP resolution, giving aspiring filmmakers with vision everything they need.
Excellent image quality for maximum editing flexibility
The FX2’s full-frame sensor produces shots with smooth, natural gradations, thanks to a 15+ stop width when recording in S-Log3, ensuring that even high-contrast scenes are captured in every detail. The base ISO for S-Log3 shooting can be set to 800 or 4000, and the camera supports S-Gamut3/S-Gamut3.Cine color gamuts for wider compatibility. All of this adds up to maximum editing efficiency when shooting with multiple cameras.
Multiple recording formats for flexible shooting and editing
7K oversampling is used with full-pixel readout and no binning when shooting in full-frame 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160), while 4K 60p (59.94p) recording is available in Super 35mm mode. With 10-bit depth, 4:2:2 color sampling, efficient MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec and Intra recording including DCI-4K (4096 x 2160), it ensures excellent quality.
Log recording functions for production flexibility
For creative flexibility, there are three modes for Log recording — Flexible ISO, Cine EI and Cine EI Quick — with Cine EI widely used in professional cinematography for footage shot with post-production in mind. Depending on the shooting environment, choose a base ISO of 800 or 4000 to maintain maximum range throughout the shoot, allowing specific tonal ranges to be enhanced in post-production to achieve the desired cinematic look.
Import up to 16 user LUTs
With the FX2, LUTs can be imported and applied to the LCD screen and electronic viewfinder during shooting or during movie playback, providing a more accurate preview of the final graded image. In addition to the three presets, up to 16 user LUT files can be imported and selected from memory cards or Sony's Creators' Cloud. The LUT used for recording can then be embedded in the video metadata for easy access during post-production.
Create moods directly from the camera
Picture profile presets make it easy to adjust color and gradations to create different moods in-camera. These include the invaluable S-Cinetone™, which produces beautiful skin tones. Imported user LUTs can be registered as PPLUT 1 to 4, and applied during recording, while an expanded range of 12 Creative Look profiles, including FL2 and FL3, offer a comprehensive selection of visual moods for a variety of recording needs.
Decompression projection for anamorphic lenses
Anamorphic lenses are a popular choice for creating a distinctive cinematic look. The FX2 is equipped with a decompression display function that allows viewing in the standard CinemaScope 2.93:1 aspect ratio when shooting with anamorphic lenses. It offers 1.3x and 2.0x decompression settings, while Sony’s Monitor & Control app provides even more detailed settings for viewing on a tablet or other external display device.
Frame rate freedom
An FPS menu inherits features from higher-end Cinema Line models, including a [Variable] setting that makes it easy to control the frame rate: up to 2.5x slow motion in 4K resolution or up to 5x slow motion when recording in Full HD at up to 120 fps.
Wide variety of expressive E-mount lenses
Sony offers over 70 high-performance E-mount lenses, including ultra-wide-angle lenses, super telephoto zooms, premium prime lenses and autozoom lenses. Pair them with genuine Sony microphones for exceptional audio quality and choose from a range of other accessories to unleash your creative vision.
Compact and lightweight, with integrated accessory mounting points
Featuring the same compact flat-top design as the FX3 and FX30 in the Cinema Line series, the FX2 is ideal for handheld shooting, as well as gimbal and drone mounting. The magnesium alloy exterior features 1/4-20 (UNC) screw holes in three locations for accessory mounting, making the overall system lighter and more compact, while reducing assembly and disassembly time. Two additional screw holes for secure tripod mounting are located on the bottom panel.
Install a top handle for even easier handling
Sony's XLR-H1 XLR Grip Unit can be attached to the FX2 body to minimize shifts in the center of gravity when changing lenses. It can also greatly improve the flexibility of handheld shooting, especially in demanding situations such as shooting from a low position on the move. The grip has three 1/4-20 screw holes for attaching other accessories.
Real-time recognition autofocus supported by artificial intelligence technology
Equipped with a powerful AI processing unit, the FX2 is capable of real-time recognition autofocus for people, animals, birds, vehicles, and even insects. A detection frame indicates the recognized subject, and tracking can be started simply by touching the subject on the screen. Advanced human posture estimation technology accurately recognizes the subject's movement, and human eye recognition has been improved by approximately 30% compared to the FX3 / FX30.
Precise focus control
AF Assist allows seamless manual focus switching for smooth focus transitions, while 7 AF transition speed settings and 5 sensitivity settings offer detailed control. Focus Map makes it easy to visualize depth of field by overlaying focus information on the live view screen, while Breath Compensation can significantly improve image stability.
Automatic framing using advanced artificial intelligence technology
The FX2's auto-framing function automatically crops and tracks a subject so that the subject is in a prominent position when the camera is mounted on a tripod, creating shots that look as if they were taken by an experienced operator. The frame stabilizer function automatically keeps the subject in the same position within the frame, which can be useful, for example, when the camera operator moves alongside the subject.
Stabilization for dynamic handheld shots
Active Mode boosts stabilization while you’re walking to shoot. Or, for even faster shots, Dynamic Active Mode uses electronic stabilization for up to 30% improved performance, making it possible to capture steady shots even when running. Corresponding stabilization metadata is embedded in the shots, allowing for even greater stabilization control in post-production, if needed.
Still images at the touch of a switch
A single switch selects MOVIE or STILL mode and instantly recalls all the corresponding settings. In addition to offering 33MP resolution and continuous burst shooting at up to 10fps, the camera is equipped with a [Create still images from shooting markers] function that allows you to capture still shots while recording or playing back videos that have a user LUT already imported.
Visual consistency in stills and videos
Log mode is also available for still images, making it possible to capture JPEG and HEIF still images with the S-Log3 gamma curve used during video capture, so the same workflow can be easily applied during post production. Transform your stills in editing applications like Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, ready for a variety of uses while maintaining the same look.
Tiltable high-definition electronic viewfinder
Stay focused when shooting even in bright environments or when there are distractions, thanks to the approximately 3.68 million-dot OLED viewfinder. Magnification is 0.70x (50mm lens, infinity focus, -1m diopter), and the viewing angle and field of view are optimized for video recording. The viewfinder itself can be rotated from 0° to +90° for easy viewing at any angle, and the eyepiece can be removed or reversed from left to right, as needed.
Control device designed for professional use
The FX2 offers the size and weight advantages of mirrorless cameras, while offering professional-grade functionality. Frequently used controls are grouped around the grip and top panel, while long-travel buttons on the top panel are easy to operate even with your thumb. The zoom lever offers effective control of auto zoom and clear image zoom.
Flexible multi-angle LCD screen
The 3.0-type, multi-angle, 1.03 million-dot high definition LCD screen can be rotated to a wide range of angles and is free from HDMI cable interference. Touch operation is still available when the screen is open to the side.
Frequently used parameters, all in one place
The FX2 inherits the BIG6 (Home) screen from high-end CineAlta cameras like the VENICE, which allows you to easily monitor six key parameters in MOVIE mode: FPS (frame rate), ISO, Shutter (speed/angle), Aperture or ND Filter, Exposure, and White Balance. This proven BIG6 (Home) screen contributes to smooth, effortless operation and provides quick access to variable/fixed parameters.
Proxy registration
Low-bitrate HD proxy video can be recorded simultaneously with any of the available recording formats, including XAVC SI 4K. These files can then be used for editing and previewing, reducing the load on the computer when working with 4K footage. Proxy files can be recorded in two formats: XAVC HS (1920 x 1080) at 10-bit depth or XAVC S (1280 x 720) at an even lighter 8-bit depth.
High visibility recording lights and recording indicator
The camera is equipped with recording lights on both the front (top) and rear, so you can easily see if you're capturing the action. The illuminated REC button doubles as a recording light linked to the rear light, and a red frame on the LCD screen also acts as an indicator for recording, remaining visible even when the screen is partially covered by equipment or a gimbal.
